An Oral History Of Gestalt Therapy: Interviews With Laura Perls, Isadore From, Erving & Miriam Polster, And Elliott Shapiro

"When The Gestalt Journal began publication plans in 1997, we decided to initiate a series of interviews with those in the Gestalt community who had been involved in the development of Gestalt therapy since its inception in the early 1940's.
Our choice were obvious and our interview with Laura Perls appeared in the premier issue of the Journal in 1978. Interviews with Isadore From, and Erving and Miriam Polster appeared in the next two issues. Our interview with educational innovator Elliott Shapiro, also among those involved in the germination of Gestalt therapy, appeared later.
Rather than updating the introductions to each interview, we have left them as originally written. The interview with Laura Perls appeared in Volume I, No. 1 (Winter, 1978), the interview with Isadore From in Volume 1, No. 2 (Fall, 1978), the interview with Erving & Miriam Polster in Volume II, No. 1, and the interview with Elliott Shapiro in Volume VIII, No. 2 (Fall, 1985).
Our attempt was not only to provide an informal history of the theoretical influences on the development of Gestalt therapy, but also to capture some sense of the personalities intimately involved in Gestalt's beginnings. We hope we've succeeded."

"Parecería que bajo el nombre de Psicoterapia Gestalt (PG) ocurren cosas no sólo diversas, que tal vez estaría muy bien que sucediesen bajo otro nombre, sino también cosas absolutamente contradictorias y en muchos casos hasta opuestas a lo que teóricamente se concibe como Psicoterapia Gestalt en los libros de texto de la misma.
En nombre de la PG he visto hacer Programación Neurolingüística, Psicoanálisis, Terapia Racional Emotiva, Bioenergética, etc. He visto inducir, provocar, manipular, violentar, imponer y no he visto respetar, empatizar, aceptar, acompañar.
En este momento siento la urgente necesidad de decir en voz alta lo que veo pues amo a la Psicoterapia Gestalt y los valores que ella representa y me preocupa mucho que se le llame Gestalt a casi cualquier cosa. Veo el nombre de la Psicoterapia Gestalt asociada a enfoques y métodos psicoterapéuticos que tienen poco o nada en común con ella, resultando grotesca y antagónica su asociación."

Robine aprovecha la oportunidad de este diálogo para expresar algunas de sus ideas vanguardistas sobre el campo, el self, el "ello de la situación". Da una idea clarificadora de la Terapia Gestalt en Francia, dividida (¡desgraciadamente!) como en otras partes, y también del desarrollo a través del tiempo de su "vida en la Gestalt", con sus fases y sus cambios de forma de pensar, como es el caso de la mayor parte de nosotros.
Jean-Marie Robine, eminente pensador, autor y practicante gestáltico francés ha fundado el Institut Françcais de Gestalt-thérapie en 1980. Ejerce habitualmente en Bordeaux y enseña Terapia Gestalt en Europa y en el mundo entero, de Moscú a México, pasando por el Océano Índico.
Ha fundado las dos revistas francesas de Terapia Gestalt y ha formado parte del Comité de redacción de Cahiers de Gestalt-thérapie, de Gestalt Review, y del nuevo International Gestalt Journal. Ha escrito numerosos artículos, y muchos de ellos han sido traducidos a otros idiomas.
